Signs and Symptoms of Keratoconus

The signs and symptoms of Keratoconus can change as the disease progresses. In its early stages, the symptoms might be subtle and easily confused with other common vision problems. Awareness is crucial for early diagnosis and management.

Common Early Symptoms

  • Blurred or Distorted Vision: This is often the first sign. Straight lines may look wavy or bent.
  • Frequent Changes in Eyeglass Prescription: A hallmark of progressive Keratoconus is needing a new prescription almost every time you visit the eye doctor.
  • Increased Sensitivity to Light and Glare: Bright lights can be uncomfortable, making night driving particularly difficult.

Symptoms as the Condition Advances

As the cornea continues to change shape, symptoms can become more severe:

  • Seeing Halos or "Ghost Images": This is especially noticeable around lights.
  • Eye Strain or Headaches: The effort to see clearly can lead to discomfort.
  • Sudden Worsening or Clouding of Vision: In rare cases, the inner lining of the cornea can break, causing it to swell rapidly. This condition, called hydrops, requires immediate medical attention.

"If you notice your vision is rapidly changing or you're experiencing new light sensitivity, it's essential to see an eye doctor for a comprehensive exam."

Optometrist Association

If you experience any of these symptoms, it's important to schedule an appointment with an eye care professional who can perform the necessary tests to determine the cause.
